If yours develops a leak, it will be a very slow seep and no danger to the engine. But it might leave a few spots on your garage floor. I always change the washer, but you shouldn't feel required to. The drawback to not changing it regularly is that you have to live with the leak until the next oil change before you can fix it. That's why they change perfectly good ones.
