WebIIRC you can push a 21:9 resolution on HDMI but it won't have a high refresh rate. The reason why DP is a big deal for us is because, IIRC, the only HDMI that is specced for 3440x1440 and 60+ Hz is HDMI 2.0 which has a low adoption rate right now. DP was all good with the resolution and refresh rate for a long while.
